You Blow Me Away, Valentine! Get Real, Valentine, Day 2

No marriage can thrive without joy!

…even childlike joy!

Today’s “Get Real, Valentine” challenge is to get in a joyful, playful mindset today, and get ready to have fun with this “Up, Up, and Away” date night.

“I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.” Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 (ESV).

God wants your marriage to be full of joy and pleasure. Yes, marriage is hard work, and often times the “nitty gritty” is more challenging than it would first appear. But take time to take a load off and celebrate what you’ve accomplished in your marriage, what milestones you’ve reached, and what obstacles you’ve overcome. Celebrate the little things. Let yourself loose and embrace the joy and passion and love in your marriage wholeheartedly.

In order to truly thrive in your marriage, a joyful heart is essential.

  • Find something to celebrate tonight about your husband. My husband was officially made manager at his work recently so tonight we celebrate!
  • Praise God for your marriage. Ask Him to fill your hearts with joy, laughter, and merriment.
  • Thank God for your husband. Think about how your husband makes you laugh and smile, and all the reasons you are grateful for him. Rejoice!

Words of Encouragement:

My husband brings me such joy! He works hard to please me, makes me smile and laugh, and he imparts much godly wisdom. His love gets me up in the mornings, and the joy of pleasing him is so wonderful.

Philemon 1:7 says, “For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my (husband), because (my heart has) been refreshed through you.” [paraphrase – read original text here].

Write an erasable message on your bathroom mirror using this verse. Send your sweetheart this verse in a text message. Write a note and stick it to his computer screen. Put it somewhere he’ll see it and know how much you love him, and how he brings you joy.

Up, Up, and Away Date Night:

When my husband and I were dating, we spent our first Valentine’s Day watching the sweet Pixar movie, Up. It’s such an adorable movie perfect for family night or a romantic night of fun with your husband.

Up-themed activities

  • Grab your husband and plant a big kiss on him like Ellie does in the movie.
  • Enjoy a romantic late/afternoon or dinner picnic and gaze up at the clouds (or stars).
  • Read together separately, but snuggle or hold hands while doing so.
  • Consider making a dreams and adventures book together. What dreams do you have for life together? If money and responsibilities weren’t an issue, where would your dream vacation be?
  • Start a coin jar to save up for something special. It doesn’t have to be a dream vacation or an adventure like in the movie, just something special you’d like to do with your spouse.
  • Dance around the living room with your honey!

If you have time and money, get a balloon from your local dollar store or a whole bouquet of balloons. Here are some cute balloon ideas on Pinterest: Idea #1, Idea #2, Idea #3, and Idea #4.

Pick up some bubble wands and have some fun blowing bubbles to each other while chasing each other around the yard.

Pop a bottle of bubbly (i.e. champagne, sparkling wine or cider) and toast to a joyful life together.

Make a card for your sweetheart using balloons or bubbles. Write something like: “You blow me away, Valentine,” “You make my heart bubble over,” or “I get bubbly over you!”

Surprise your sweetheart (if you have a bathtub, hot tub, or Jacuzzi) with a bubble bath (or jetted bath). Take your husband “up, up, and away” and enjoy a night in “paradise.”

As promised, photos from last night’s date:
