Beginning March 2nd, Fridays are devoted to praying for marriage. Join me for 45 days of Prayer! See Get On Your Knees and Pray for more details. Also check out Facebook and Twitterthis week as I post things you can pray for under the hashtag #pray4marriage.
I composed the following post last year regarding the purpose of marriage and the armor of God. I feel it’s incredibly important to post this again today because the state of marriage is at stake. The sections in parentheses or brackets are added or edited from the previous edition.
Here’s a prayer I prayed (the summer I was engaged) for Adam that I’d like to share using the passage in Ephesians 6 about putting on the full armor of God.
If you’re a married woman, consider praying for your husband daily if you aren’t already. If you already are, you go, girl! Keep it up! Pray the full armor of God upon your husband! As my family always said, “behind every good man is a good woman.” He needs you! Pray for him and with him!
And if you’re not married, I strongly urge you, single ladies, to take up the full armor of God and go to battle for your future husband or for husbands you know (whether fathers or grandfathers, brothers or cousins, pastors, teachers, or friends).
[If you’ve been married before and are now divorced or widowed, first, may God bless your life with peace and healing! But this doesn’t exclude you from praying for marriage. Pray the full armor of God upon the husbands of this nation and of the world, that God would equip them to lead and serve their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the women of the world – their wives, mothers, daughters, grandmothers, granddaughters, sisters, coworkers, teachers, and friends.]
[As there are 7 days in a week, I suggest that you take one of each piece of the armor of God each day. The Bible verses are included for extra reading.]
Full Armor of God Prayer
I pray God girds your belt with truth – the truth that God has given you a great battle to fight against the Devil and His dark powers, the truth that God has given you a great adventure, mapped out ahead of you, just waiting for you to step (ahead another day), and the truth that He has a beauty for you to rescue – that you were designed to protect beauty, truth, honor, righteousness, purity, loveliness, and excellence. [I pray that God would make you a man of truth and integrity, fighting the lies of Satan and maintaining godly honor in your daily life.] (Psalm 25:5)
I pray that you put on the breastplate of righteousness, knowing that you belong to God, you are His warrior, and you have been given the power to help vanquish the Devil. I pray that you tap into the greatest Superpower ever – Jesus Christ, and that in wearing the breastplate of righteousness, you show that His power is in you and that Satan has no power over those who are in Christ. I pray that God gives you a discerning heart to govern and lead people and to distinguish between right and wrong. I pray God gives you victory in your daily battle, for He shields those who walk in Him, and guards the course of the just. [I pray that God would make you a man of righteousness, that He would be your leader, and make your way straight.] (Psalm 5:8)
I pray that you will fit your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace, knowing as you walk in faith and in the Word, you are guaranteed divine protection and strength. I pray that (although our lives are not absent of war as we are constantly in battle in the Christian life,) we have peace, clarity of mind, and freedom in war, free from guilt and shame, and free from conflict with a dangerous God. I pray that He will prepare your feet to go with the gospel and take it out into the world – into your relationships, into the church, into the workplace, into your home, further into your heart. I pray you will have the courage to preach the gospel of the Lord, to live out the joy which God has given you as He provides all good things. I pray that you will battle those things which wage war on your soul, that you will battle those desires which are against the Spirit, knowing your best defense is God’s truth and His Word. [I pray that God would mold you into a man of the gospel, thoroughly equipped to be in the service of an Almighty God.] (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
I pray that you will above all else take up the shield of faith, blocking the Devil’s throws with the Lord who is our help and our shield. I pray you will be protected against every trick Satan tries to throw at you – that you realize you are protected by the power of God through faith and prayer. I pray you will fight the good fight of faith, taking hold of eternal life to which you were called into perfect communion with God, protecting all that is good and those whom you are called to defend. [I pray that God will mold you into a man of faith, devoted to doing the Lord’s work, devoted to searching the Scriptures, devoted to prayer, and devoted to love.] (Psalm 27:8, Romans 12:10; Colossians 4:2; Hebrews 11:6).
I pray that you will take up the helmet of salvation, that you will remember what Christ has done for you, and that anytime your head is not with God, it is susceptible to Satan preying on you. I pray you will seek God to protect your head (your thoughts) and your heart (your emotions) and your soul (your life). I pray that as you battle day to day that you remember your hope is in God and His salvation. I pray Psalm 140:7 upon you, “O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, Jesus, You have covered my head in the day of battle.” [I pray you will be a man who understands his state with God, that without God, you are dead in your trespasses and sins, but because of God’s great love for you, He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for you and He was raised from the dead so that you might be saved by grace through faith, and that you have been specially equipped to do His work.] (Ephesians 2:1-10)
I pray you take up the Sword of the Spirit, that you fight readily and mightily with His Word which speaks to your heart through the Spirit. It is not by power or by might, but by His Spirit that we are victorious in battle. The Sword of the Spirit is made for you to use firsthand, no pun intended. It is made to be up close and personal when it comes to attacking the Devil and fighting against sin. You are not alone in battle and it is not just any sword. It is living and powerful, and sharper than any other two-edged sword; it pierces even to the division of the soul and spirit, through joints and marrow, and is the discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Talk about powerful. You were designed to tap into that power. You have the Sword of the Spirit in your possession and the Spirit, Himself, is right there with you. I pray you will remember you were designed to act, to fight with everything within you. Matthew Henry wrote, “A single word from Scriptures, well understood, and rightly applied, at once destroys temptation and subdues the most formidable enemy.” The quickest and best defense against the devil is the truth. Use it! Since Jesus is the greatest Superpower, I pray you tap into him daily and I am thankful you belong to Him. I pray the power of the Holy Spirit upon you, His daily protection, and His Words into the depths of your heart and soul. [I pray you will be a man of the sword, a man of the sword of the Spirit, thoroughly grounded in His Word and His truth, using it against the wiles and lies of the Evil One.) [Hebrews 4:12)
[Finally, I pray for your prayer life that it will be rich and deep, that you will grow closer to the Lord your God who has chosen you specifically, who has adopted you into His kingdom, who has blessed you with every spiritual blessing under heaven, who has loved you with an everlasting love, who has redeemed you through His blood, who has brought you out of the bondage of sin and has forgiven you eternally, who has lavished the riches of His grace upon you, who has made known His mysteries according to His good pleasure, and who has given you incredible hope through Jesus Christ and has sealed you with the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of His promise of eternal life. I pray that you would remember God’s people and pray for them diligently. (Ephesians 1:3-14) And lastly, I pray that you will be a man of prayer, alert and ready to fight, not afraid to come before the Lord and to seek His will, bringing all your petitions before Him, praising Him, thanking Him, glorifying Him, confessing your sins before Him, knowing He will absolve you according to His justice and mercy. (Ephesians 6:18)
In Christ’s holy and precious Name,
